Weil's disease worries
RUMOURS that David Walliams was being tested for the potentially lethal Weil’s disease after his 140-mile charity swim in the River Thames that raised £1million for Sport Relief reminded me how ghastly this condition can be.
I have first-hand experience of this as my eldest son contracted it after merely walking in the mud of the Thames some seven years ago.
Days later he went from playing for the school’s first XI to casualty in a matter of hours and it was only due to the vigilance of my local GP, Dr Stephen Pierpoint, and the staff at University Hospital in Lewisham, south-east London, that he recovered.
It is a frightening and debilitating condition and I am delighted the comedian does not appear to have it.
