Tesco workers share £105million bonus pot
EVERY little helps at Tesco, as 216,000 workers, from checkout staff to drivers and store managers, will attest, sharing a £105million bonus pot courtesy of the firm’s fantastic results.
Chief executive Sir Terry Leahy picked up £5.2million last year and stresses the supermarket giant’s success is actually quite simple: it’s down to looking after the customer.
I decided to put that to the test and, without using my full name or mentioning this column or my radio and TV work, wrote directly to Sir Terry about what I have to admit was a fairly low-level grouse. Within three days I had a letter from a member of his staff apologising that Sir Terry was away on business but would deal with my concern on his return.
I didn’t have to wait long. Less than a week after that I had a fulsome explanation, satisfactory outcome and letter personally signed (I checked!) by Sir Terry.
He’s worth every penny of that bumper salary and I just wish people like him were running the country rather than its supermarkets.
