Yes, German soldiers also died in WW1
THE BBC is under attack for planning a series on the First World War which gives equal prominence to two ordinary soldiers: one British, one German. It should stick to its guns.
The Germans in the trenches were not the Nazis of the Second World War.
Of course we should celebrate the 100th anniversary of victory but it is undeniabl e that ordinary soldiers going through the hell of the trenches suffered horribly no matter which side they were on.
Have those who are now criticising the BBC never read All Quiet On The Western Front? Do they not ask themselves why, despite being written from the viewpoint of ordinary German soldiers, it was such a massive success in Britain as much as elsewhere?
The Germans in the trenches were not the Nazis of the Second World War.
They had been plucked from school desks and inoffensive occupations to fight for the Kaiser as our young men had been recruited to fight for King George.
They wore different uniforms and waved different flags but endured the same hell and on death arrived at the same judgment seat.
This is for once not a case of political correctness: it is a stark reminder of what war does to ordinary mortals.
