There is a point to the long school summer holiday Mr Michael Gove
I HAVE a lot of admiration for some of the work Michael Gove is doing in education but I do not agree with him over shorter school holidays, other than half terms which have expanded until they are not much shorter than the Christmas or Easter breaks.
Serious sixth-formers can use the period to study and read around their subjects instead of concentrating just on what is necessary for the next exam
The long summer holiday still has purpose. Families like to holiday together and a long break makes that more achievable than the confines of a short one with everyone in the workplace wanting to be away at the same time.
Older children can work and earn and still have time to fi t in the schoolwork they have to complete.
Serious sixth-formers can use the period to study and read around their subjects instead of concentrating just on what is necessary for the next exam.
Language students can spend a good chunk of time with a family in another country.
So nought out of 10 for that one, Michael.
