What's the big fuss about George Osborne's past?
I AM weary of reading what George Osborne may or may not have got up to at Oxford where he belonged to the Bullingdon Club, renowned for the drinking and wild conduct of some of its members.
It was 20 years ago and Mr Osborne was an undergraduate.
Many respectable citizens either behaved or thought then in ways which would make them blush now and that probably includes some of those who are commenting so freely in the media.
Princess Anne said at the age of 19 that university was an overrated occupation.
Decades later she became a very good Chancellor of London University and predictably her youthful comment was trotted out as if it somehow should have disqualified her from holding the post.
Jack Straw was a militant socialist who in his youth engaged in sit-ins and protests but his stint as home secretary produced policies that the Conservatives would have been pleased to have implemented.
People grow up, calm down, face reality and become pillars of the establishment.
Many respectable citizens either behaved or thought then in ways which would make them blush now
It was ever thus and it ever will be.
