The 67-year-old Partridge Family star was reportedly rushed to hospital in Florida three days ago but is now "conscious".
The star is believed to have been in failing health for the last two months and a source told TMZ that his "condition was grim".
He is believed to be suffering from kidney failure and in need of a liver transplant following a tumultuous few years.
A representative for David told Express.co.uk: "He was in an induced coma but he is currently conscious and surrounded by family."

David is a retired American actor, singer, songwriter and guitarist, most known for his role as Keith Partridge.
His stepmother Shirley Jones played his mother in the 1970s musical-sitcom.
He became a popular teen idol and had a career in both acting and music, before revealing he was suffering from dementia earlier this year.
