I have no words to describe how devastated I feel
Roy made occasional appearances in Coronation Street in 1972 and 1975, playing the rather sleazy Alec, but returned permanently to the show in 1986 and a marriage to Bet Lynch was included in his character's narrative.
After several departures and comebacks, Roy finally left Corrie at the end of 1998.
His on-screen wife Bet - played by Julie Goodyear - paid tribute to her dear friend after news of his death emerged online.

“My dearest friend Roy Barraclough has passed away at 6am this morning," Julie, 75, said in a statement.
“I have no words to describe how devastated I feel. We kept in close touch and spoke to each other at least 2 or 3 times every week.
“I will treasure all the happy times we had working and laughing together. We were just like a married couple, crazy, I know, but true.
"Rest in peace Roy. I will always love you.”
