But, last night he appeared joyful as he made a triumphant return to the awards circuit as he made a surprise appearance at the 74th Golden Globes.
The actor seemed in good spirits as he introduced a clip from the film Moonlight, which later received the Best Motion Picture accolade.
Brad's friends, including his Ocean's Eleven co-star Matt Damon, let out a huge cheer of support as he made his way onto the stage.
As the 53-year-old stood at the podium, watching the crowd cheer for him, he couldn't hide his happiness.

He flashed a huge grin at the audience and told them: "Thank you," before going on to talk about Moonlight, a coming-of-age story about a sexually confused boy in a Miami ghetto.
"It's born of the courage of a group of actors willing to strip to their souls and express their humanism inside mistake and misstep and misdeed," he explained.
"It is Barry Jenkins' profound belief that we all stand at the threshold of change and forgiveness where we only grant acceptance and love to ourselves."
Brad cut a dapper figure in a black tuxedo and sported designer stubble as he tried to keep a relatively low-profile before his surprise appearance.

He looked visibly slimmer as he attended his first awards ceremony since his split from estranged wife Angelina.
The actress filed for divorce from the Allied star for the "health of their family" back in September.
Her attorney, Robert Offer, explained: "This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time."
