They said there was now “no chance” he would allow the actress to claim sole custody.
It’s an unfortunate story about a family
One told the US showbusiness website TMZ yesterday that Pitt was incensed that court papers lodged by his estranged wife had “unleashed hell” by insinuating that his parenting made him a potential risk to their children.
Pitt had apparently wanted to keep the divorce under wraps for the benefit of their children.
“Like with any divorce, there are now likely to be some difficult times ahead,” another source said.
The celebrity couple met on the set of Mr and Mrs Smith and fell in love with each other
The warring couple, whose split after 12 years together was announced on Monday, have now appointed legal teams to see if an agreement can be thrashed out.
George Clooney, a friend of the couple, said he was “very sad” to hear of the split.
Asked while visiting the United Nations for his thoughts on the news of the couple, Clooney at first responded: “What happened?”
But when it was explained to him that Angelina had filed for divorce, the actor said: “I didn’t know that. Wow.”
Clooney, who became close to Pitt when the pair filmed Ocean’s Eleven, added: “I feel very sorry then. That’s a sad story and unfortunate for a family. It’s an unfortunate story about a family. I feel very sorry to hear that.”
Pitt and Angelina are understood to have drifted apart following a growing and protracted series of angry disagreements over their future and that of their children – Maddox, 15, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, Pax, 12, and eight-year-old twins, Knox and Vivienne.
Maddox, Zahara and Pax were adopted from orphanages in Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam, respectively and the other three are their biological children.
While Angelina, 41, has been focusing on her humanitarian work, her 52-year-old husband has been concentrating on launching a resort in Croatia.
The two have six children, three of which are adopted
Earlier this month Angelina visited a refugee camp in Jordan where she urged world leaders to find a solution to the Syrian crisis.
At the same time, Pitt spent the first part of September in Croatia where he is negotiating a £1billion deal to build a new luxury resort in the coastal town of Zablace, complete with villas, a golf course, shops and a flagship hotel.
The pair were last seen at an official public appearance together last November at the premiere of their flop movie By The Sea, which was made in Malta.
The film – ironically about an unhappy couple – is also believed to have been a key factor in the relationship breaking down.
Angelina, who wrote, produced and directed the movie, previously admitted the filming process was “hard” and left the couple “really worried” about their marriage.
Rumours have circled Pitt was having n affair with fellow actor Marion Cotillard
She added at the time: “Brad and I have our issues but if the characters were even remotely close to our problems we couldn’t have made the film.”
Pitt and Angelina met in 2005 on the set of action romcom Mr & Mrs Smith, around the same time as his divorce from Friends actress Jennifer Aniston.
The relationship was the subject of Hollywood scandal but the couple have always denied any infidelity.
The impending divorce will be the third for Angelina, who was married to actor Billy Bob Thornton for three years until 2003 and before that to British actor Johnny Lee Miller.
