Sag Awards 2016: Danish Girl star Eddie Redmayne hopes for Oscar boost at glitzy ceremony

EDDIE REDMAYNE will attend tonight's Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards hoping for a boost in his bid to scoop another Oscar.

Eddie Redmayne hopes to win another Oscar for his role in The Danish Girl

The SAGs, to held held tonight in Los Angeles, California, are generally seen as a testing ground for the Academy Awards.

The last 11 stars to win the gong for Male Actor in a Leading Role also went on to pick up the Best Actor Oscar.

Last year Redmayne continued the tradition by winning his first SAG Award and then his first Oscar for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

The London-born actor. 34 is nominated again this year, for his role as transgender pioneer Lili Elbe in Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl.

He will be up against the likes of Johnny Depp, nominated for his role as gangster film Black Mass, and The Revenant star Leonardo DiCaprio.

Also shortlisted are Irish actor Michael Fassbender for his titular role in Steve Jobs, and Bryan Cranston for his star turn as Dalton Trumbo in the film Trumbo.

He scooped the Best Actor gong for The Theory of Everything last year

Oscar nominees Cate Blanchett, Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronanwill compete for the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

They will also face competition from Sarah Silverman for her role in I Smile Back, and Dame Helen Mirren for Woman in Gold.

Dame Helen, 70, has also been nominated for her supporting role as gossip columnist Hedda Hopper in Trumbo.

Redmayne is expecting his first child with wife Hannah Bagshawe

British actors Idris Elba and Mark Rylance will go head to head, competing against each other in two categories.

Elba was nominated for the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for his role as DCI John Luther in BBC drama Luther.

And Rylance was honoured for his role as Thomas Cromwell in acclaimed period drama Wolf Hall.

Elba, 43, and Rylance, 56, also scored nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture.
