Butler of Downton Abbey Carson to have his secret past revealed
DOWNTON ABBEY fans are set to see a side of starchy butler Carson that few would have imagined possible in the show’s fourth season which starts tonight.
A mystery lover from his past returns to haunt him, actor Jim Carter revealed. The Yorkshire-born star, 65, spoke about the plot twist in Los Angeles on the eve of tonight’s Emmy Awards.
Carter, a best supporting actor nominee, spilled the beans about Carson at a pre-ceremony party at Soho House in West Hollywood. He said: “We do hear in this series that once upon a time did beat a romantic heart in Carson’s chest. A figure comes up from his past to remind him of a little romance way back.
“Carson, to his shame, had been in a music hall act called the Cheerful Charlies and his old partner re-emerges in very bad times bringing back memories of Carson’s younger self.”
Carter added: “After that my lips are sealed.”
He and his fellow Downton stars are hoping to repeat their phenomenal awards success in the US, where the show has also picked up millions of new devotees and is again a contender in the best drama series category.
