Holly Willoughby tweets her joy at successful throat operation
HOLLY Willoughby has revealed that she has successfully undergone surgery performed to remove nodules from her throat.
The TV presenter took to Twitter to announce her joy after doctors removed "vocal calluses" from her throat, in a procedure that Adele underwent not too long ago.
And joking about the comparative surgery, she tweeted: "Phew! Nodules gone, operation a success. After Adele had hers done, she won a Grammy… fingers crossed! Xxx"
The Wanted's Nathan Sykes also underwent the surgery in April, which was aired in an episode of the band's reality TV show on E!
The operation - which is done using laser treatment - was once only available in the US, but has since become common practise in the UK.
It involves the removal of vocal ford nodules, which are similar to calluses suffered on feet.
"The vocal cords, located in the voice box in the middle of the neck, are two tough, fibrous bands that vibrate to produce sound," said Mike Dilkes, consultant ear, nose and throat surgeon at the London Laser Clinic.
"They are covered with a layer of tissue similar to skin. With use, this layer thickens.
"With heavy use, the thickening may localise, producing a nodule that is a smooth, soft benign lump containing mostly blood and blood vessels."
While most disappear with rest, some remain, become severe and require surgery.
Mr Dilkes fully backs the Green Light KTP: "The light beams are extremely accurate and vaporise nodules without damage to surrounding tissue. This is useful on vocal cords, where scarring causes long-term damage to the voice."
