Downton Abbey dresses go on display in the village where the series is filmed
TEN costumes worn in the hit drama Downton Abbey have gone on display in the village where many of the scenes were filmed.
The outfits are on show at the West Ox Art Gallery in Bampton, Oxfordshire, where many of the scenes throughout the three series have been located.
Visitors of the display will be able to see a mixture of both the extravagant gowns worn by the members of the family, and simple staff uniforms worn by the help.
The collection includes dresses worn by the likes of Lady Mary, Lady Rose McClare and Violent Crawley, and demonstrates the fashion popular at the time.
Costume designer Caroline McFall, who holds a Designers Guild award and an Emmy for her work on the show, says she doesn’t try to exactly copy outfits worn at the time, but instead translate them using the same aesthetic, making sure the style is appealing to a modern audience.
Bampton has been the location for many key scenes in the show, including the wedding of Lady Mary and the jilting of Lady Edith.
The exhibition, which runs until 29 September, also includes artworks inspired by the series. Admission costs £5.
