Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman has announced that she is engaged to get married at the age of 78. The actress, known for her role as Evelyn Plummer on the ITV cobbles, asked boyfriend David Turner to marry him while travelling on a train.

The Dame previously admitted she'd been "against the M word" (marriage), as she mourned the death of her former partner, retired computer expert Guido Castro, who he tragically died in January 2021.

Prior to that, the TV legend had been married to Corrie writer Jack Rosenthal from 1974 until his death from cancer in 2004.

But in a spur-of-the-moment decision, Maureen decided to pop the question to her latest beau. The couple had been travelling home on the train from the launch of the Queen's son, Tom Parker-Bowles' latest cooking book.

It came as Maureen realised it was the one day of the year Jewish women can propose. The actress wrote in the Spectator: "Later that night my partner David and I decided to tell our children that, with a combined age of 156, we are going to get married.

"In truth I had been rather against the ‘M’ word, but on a train coming back from Edinburgh he mentioned that it was the minor festival of Tu B’Av – a day when a Jewish woman can ask a man to marry her.

"Unable to resist the gag, I slid under the table separating us on to one knee and asked him for his hand. To my surprise and slight panic, he gave it."

The bride-to-be broke the news to her family on a very special date, September 8, which would have been the birthday of her late husband Jack Rosenthal.

Maureen and Jack made their first public appearance together at the Oldie of the Year awards last November.

The star's portrayal of the no-nonsense Evelyn made her one of ITV Coronation Street's standout characters. She lives on the famous cobbles alongside Tyrone Dobbs, Fiz (Jennie McAlpine), and their two daughters, Hope (Isabella Flanagan) and Ruby (Billie Naylor).

Speaking about appearing on the soap, Maureen previously said: "It’s good for you, it keeps you on your metal, my goodness me. I mean everything is still completely fascinating to me."
