Kate Garraway faced 'tricky' ordeal at airport on son's first birthday without dad Derek
Kate Garraway and son Bill enjoyed a "dream" holiday on his first birthday after the death of her husband Derek Draper from Covid-related complications.
Kate Garraway confessed she faced a “tricky” time at the airport as she jetted off with son Bill on a once-in-a-lifetime birthday trip.
It was the 15-year-old’s first birthday since the death of his dad Derek Draper earlier this year. ITV broadcaster Kate and her teenage son were invited to Walt Disney World by her friends Vickie and Nick White.
Kate was keen to join the couple, and their children Monty, 15, and Tabby 14, because she said she knew Vickie would “hold her hand” throughout the trip. It meant the rest of the party could bring “lots of fun and celebrations”.
But Kate, 57, admitted that she found the airport extra “tricky” this time around.
That is because Derek, who died from Covid-related complications, used to deal with all of the organising.

Speaking to Hello!, Kate said: “As anyone grieving can tell you, even the smallest triggers can set you back. The airport was particularly tricky because he was always the holiday organiser with his folder full of paperwork.”
She previously revealed Derek’s round-the-clock care left her with mounting debt. With Bill marking his first birthday since Derek’s death, Kate says she was worried it would end up just the two of them celebrating the occasion at home.

However, Bill and Monty were able to achieve a long-held goal of visiting Galaxy’s Edge, the Star Wars theme park. Kate added: “The whole experience has been amazing. I mean, going to Disney World for your birthday - it’s a dream come true for anyone, isn’t it?”
Kate, who won two National Television Awards documentaries about Derek’s Covid battle, says the family “thought about him all the time”.
She says she still misses her husband, with whom she also shared 18-year-old daughter Darcey.
Kate last week revealed Darcey had received her A-Level results on what would have been Derek's birthday. Kate said: "Darcey got her results on another one of those firsts this year - Derek's birthday. She didn't get what she might have done but hey did better than any of us feared under the circumstances. I couldn't be prouder of her and know her Dad would be too. We went to Dad's grave to 'tell' him before she went out to celebrate with friends."
