Sir Brian May broke a key rule as he documented his General Election voting journey. The legendary Queen guitarist shared a video of himself in the polling station to his 3.3 million Instagram followers.

However any sort of photography or filming is forbidden in the stations as it runs the risk of inadvertently sharing someone else's voting preferences.

The Electoral Commission says it risks compromising the secrecy of the ballot. Revealing how somebody else voted, even by accident, could lead to a huge punishment.

Taking photos or videos outside the station is fine and Brian also shared a brief clip of the Polling Station sign as he headed towards it. He accompanied that video with a lengthy caption which drew on the fact that today (July 4) is also American Independence Day.

His second post from inside the station is the one that could cause issues for the Knight of the realm.

Express.co.uk has chosen not to post the clip or images taken from it in order to adhere to Electoral Commission guidelines.

In it a casually dressed smiling Brian is seen standing at the polling booth holding his passport and a ballot card. The stations next to him are empty and he raises his hand to salute the camera.

He captioned it: "POLLING DAY !!! And the rare chance to help change Britain for the better. Vote with your heart, folks. Happy Independence Day ! Bri."

His faux pas didn't go unnoticed by fans and followers who were quick to point out the issues with the video. @theeditorgareth commented: "Naughty - no pics inside - guessing you’re being told off!"

@dessy_the_runner warned: "Careful folks of filming inside a polling station, getting caught filming someone else could be illegal- although this seems ok, but anyone else that might accidentally catch someone else’s ballot might be in trouble!"

@neil.dixon61 pointed out: "Illegal to film inside by the way." @misscgh scolded: "Lol bad @brianmayforreal ! Tsk tsk recording in a polling station! Such a rebel ("Sorry you can't do that")."
@starrartf1 chimed in: "WTF Photography and Videography is Illegal inside of Polling Stations!" Meanwhile @loneranger222 exclaimed: "I thought filming inside a polling station is against the law !!!!!!!!"
