BBC Radio 5 Live star Nihal Arthanayake has revealed he was involved in a potentially fatal car accident with his wife Eesha and their son. Nihal, 52, said his vehicle crashed into another car, which had collided with a lorry on the M60 on Tuesday.

The presenter took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share the terrifying news with his 117,000 followers as he posted a snap of his badly damaged car. He penned: "Two hours ago a lorry hit a car which hit me on the M60. I clung onto that steering wheel for dear life to try and keep the car steady and not hit the central reservation.

"Wife next to me and son in the back. Terrifying." Nihal's concerned followers flocked to the comments section to check how he was and express their worries for him.

One loyal fan penned: "So sorry to hear that bro, but glad no one was hurt. Big up to you for steering your family to safety." (sic) Another X user expressed: "Thinking of you Nihal, so thankful that none of you were hurt, what a terrible experience."

A third wrote: "Thank God you had the presence of mind to keep hold of the steering wheel and try to control the car. It’s like slow motion when these things happen. Time slows down. So glad your family were unharmed." While a fourth added: "Wishing you all well. Don’t underestimate how shaken you’re going to be for the next few days."

On Wednesday, the BBC star thanked his fans for their well-wishes and issued an update on how he and his family were feeling.

He wrote: "Thank you so much for all your kind messages. Mrs A has a sore neck and back. I am physically ok but not sure about my mind.

"Woke up before 6am this morning with a different version of the car crash we were involved in yesterday."

Nihal's car crash comes as he hosts his last ever show on BBC Radio 5 Live as a daytime presenter.

He has been a fixture at the BBC since 2002 starting on BBC Radio 1 with the Asian Beats show.

He swiftly moved up the ranks, hosting the weekend breakfast in 2007 and then an afternoon slot in 2008.

The radio star announced the shock news in May as he penned: "Hello everyone, some professional news from me.

"I am leaving daytimes on @bbc5live to concentrate on the aspect of broadcasting I love most, which is in depth long form interviews, which I will continue to do on @bbc5live on Sunday evenings and the Headliners Podcast."
