Springwatch's Megan McCubbin has soared into the spotlight and emerged from under her stepfather Chris Packham's wing, and has become a firm fan favourite on the hit BBC nature show.

Despite initially facing a slew of "nepo baby" accusations, the 28-year-old nature expert has begun to charm viewers and grab headlines on her own merits.

She first sparked attention with her saucy beaver innuendo, which sent social media into a frenzy, and then took the internet by storm while presenting a live segment amidst a mass of midges in Scotland.

Her simple query - "Have we seen any beaver action? " generated a flurry of responses, leading some scandalised fans fuming to BBC bosses: "This is a family show," but now the star has dismissed such antics as unintentional.

Speaking to The Mirror from Glasgow, Megan has since conveyed her bemusement regarding the online reaction invoked by her playful beaver commentary.

"I mean if an animal's called a beaver, unfortunately, it's called a beaver," she says. "And there's only so many ways you can say that. You can be a bit playful and a bit silly with things and you hope to make the audience laugh at some point."

"But with the whole beaver item, there was no intentional innuendo. I mean, just seeing that beaver live the other day, I [was] so excited. It was just great beaver action. You can't rename an animal, it's called what it's called. You say the word beaver and people start giggling."

With the subject of beavers on her mind, Megan was quick to laugh when asked if she preferred beavers to boys growing up.

Indeed in her teen years, Megan was definitely more concerned with learning about animals rather than dating and makeup - much to her step-dad Chris's relief, no doubt. "Beavers to boys?! I love that".

"I always loved wildlife. That was always part and parcel of growing up. I was always the kid that was late to class because I was picking up earthworms from the path if it rained because I didn't want anyone to tread on them.

Speaking on her relationship with her co-host and step-stepdad, Megan explained that while Chris and Megan's mum parted ways while she was still living at home, she considers him an extra parent figure.

"Technically my mum and Chris were never married. He's technically not my stepdad but it's the easiest thing to [call] him other than 'my mum's ex-boyfriend who raised me', which is a bit more of a mouthful," she chuckled.

"I've got three parents. I've got a really great relationship with my dad. I've got a great relationship with my mum and a great relationship with Chris. I'm very lucky to have three very supportive parents and am very grateful for it."

Springwatch airs on BBC and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
