When Britons think of a genuine pier experience, locations such as Blackpool or Brighton usually come to mind, but many fail to recognise one of the nation's most impressive piers.

Situated in the South West along the Bristol Channel in North Somerset sits a coastal resort boasting an exceptional pier experience.

Weston-super-Mare has undoubtedly gone above and beyond in upgrading its Grand Pier, maintaining its historic character while transforming the principal beach attraction into something extraordinary.

These days it serves modern families in ways any holiday destination would dream of, boasting an indoor complex brimming with thrills, amusement and all the classic British seaside attractions.

First launched as the Grand Pier in 1904, it has subsequently secured listed building status, protecting a rich tradition of seaside tourism in Weston, reports Somerset Live.

Yet during this time, the pier has transformed from a basic observation deck into a full-scale entertainment complex delivering countless hours of fun.

Sadly for tourists and locals alike, the pier has suffered destruction by fire on two occasions throughout its existence, first in 1930 and again in 2008. The 2008 catastrophe proved to be a turning point, leading to the total redevelopment of the pier as it appears today.

In 2009, North Somerset Council gave the green light for a new pier to be built, with contractors John Sisk and Son appointed to create a new pavilion.

The transformed Grand Pier welcomed visitors during the half-term break on 23 October 2010, with its official reopening for the summer season following the next July.

Today, while the pier continues to offer traditional seaside rock, fish and chips and boasts numerous arcade games, including the cherished 2p machines, its range extends considerably beyond these timeless favourites.

Fifteen years later and it remains a firm favourite amongst families looking for an entertaining day out, with attractions spanning two levels and breathtaking coastal views throughout.

Principal indoor attractions include the house of horrors, glow-in-the-dark go-karts, mini golf, a free fall ride, alongside a sidewinder ride, dodgems and much more besides.

One visitor shared their experience on TripAdvisor, stating: "We spent pretty much the whole day there and could easily go again the next day as we didn't do everything (didn't make it to soft play for the little ones) even though we did do the ghost train twice!

"Absolutely great day out at a beautiful venue. Wristbands are great value for money, and so much is included. 100% recommend - great destination. We will be back!"

Upon arrival, you can either pay £2 per person at the entrance or reserve your tickets in advance to avoid carrying cash.

The website showcases various packages offering unlimited ride access or admission plus entry to multiple attractions for your family, making advance booking both practical and cost-effective.

As with any pier, however, visitors should expect to spend money once they arrive at the pavilion, with individual vendors charging separately for their various games and attractions.

There is no need to venture elsewhere for food and drink either, as the Grand Pier's numerous cafés and eateries cater for every mealtime requirement.

From traditional fish and chips to sugary doughnuts, ice creams and much more besides, the pier has everything a summer getaway or seaside day trip could wish for.

One recent visitor said: "Can clearly see a lot of thought and investment has gone into the grand pier. The couple of hours we spent there were enjoyable.

"There's something and everything for all ages. Even if it's just sitting out on a nice sunny day enjoying a nice drink. £2 entrance fee doesn't break the bank."

Weston-super-Mare is also home to a second pier, though visitors will find little in the way of entertainment there, as it remains in a dilapidated condition.

Birnbeck Pier stands as a historic landmark and listed structure, currently undergoing restoration with hopes of reopening around 2027.

Having first opened its doors in 1867, the once-magnificent pier has been closed since 1994. Weston hopes to see it restored to its former glory, bringing fresh energy to the seaside town as Britain's only pier connected to an island.
