Wayne and Coleen Rooney will have to splash out an eye-watering £7 for a pint - and fork out a whopping £22 for fish and chips - in the Devon seaside town where they are rumoured to be setting up home.

The football legend and his spouse are reportedly eyeing up a move to posh Salcombe - nicknamed "Chelsea-on-Sea" - as he steps into the managerial role at Plymouth Argyle. This seaside gem holds the title of the priciest coastal town in Britain, with average property prices teetering close to the £1million mark.

Not only famed for its stunning golden sands and idyllic estuary views, Salcombe is also notorious for its wallet-thinning cost of living. Boasting one of the nation's top beer gardens, local brews in this town can hit your pocket hard at an astonishing £7 per pint.

The Ferry Inn, which clinched the 10th spot on Big 7 Travel's 2023 list of the UK's best beer gardens, serves up pints that surpass even London's steep average of £6.75. Price comparison site Finder reveals that a pint at the Ferry Inn costs £7.20.

But the staggering costs don't end at the bar. Should the Rooneys hanker for some classic British beach grub, they might pop into Dick and Wills, a waterside eatery renowned for its fish and chips.

However, a single serving of this staple of British cuisine could cost Rooney a hefty £22.95. And a standard burger comes in at £19.95.

With the Office for National Statistics 2023 data pegging the national average for fish and chips at just £9, Dick and Wills' claim of offering a "magical food and drink experience overlooking the water" may well be the indulgence the Rooneys opt for after a taxing week.

The Rooney clan might fancy a spree in the local high street shops, with boutiques like Henri Lloyd and Musto offering top-notch men's wear that would suit a football manager to a tee. But a Henri Lloyd's "consort jacket" comes with a hefty price tag of around £35 - while Musto's "hybrid vest" gilets are on sale for £112, ensuring Wayne Rooney could be the snappiest dresser in the Championship.

Naturally, the family will also want to deck out their new abode with some swanky decor and furniture. They might find themselves drawn to Susie Watson Design, where they'd have to fork out £285 for just a metre of curtain fabric.

Salcombe holds the title for the priciest coastal town in Britain to buy property, with average house prices soaring over £970,000, as per Lloyds' analysis of Land Registry figures. The most extravagant pad in the vicinity is Thalassa, a six-bedroom detached mansion priced at a whopping £5.95million, boasting over 3,000 square feet of space and listed by Strutt and Parker estate agents.

This luxury home offers direct beach access and its own private boathouse ideal for the Rooneys and their children: Kai, 13, Klay, 10, Kit, seven, and Cass, five. Should Thalassa not tickle their fancy, Bridleway House is another option, with a price tag of £3.5million.

Knight Frank, the estate agents, tout it as "an exceptional contemporary family home", built in 2017 and merely a brisk 10-minute walk from the beloved North Sands beach.

The Rooney family currently resides in a lavish £20million mansion in Cheshire, boasting six bedrooms, a home cinema, grand stables and an underground spa. The former England striker secured the managerial role in Plymouth following his dismissal from Championship club Birmingham City earlier this year.
