UK’s most beautiful and walkable city is also the best place to take a city break in 2024

Summer is only a few weeks away and lots of people are planning a luxurious trip abroad, but you do not have to spend lots of money to visit somewhere incredible in the UK. 

Scotland’s capital city Edinburgh has been named the “best UK city break” to take in 2024 by CN Traveler, who said the “beautiful city” has lots going on this year which makes it worth a weekend getaway or staycation.

They wrote: “After almost two years of muted activity, it’s heartening to see that the pandemic hasn’t affected Edinburgh’s ability to wow visitors.”

It has also been named one of the most beautiful cities in the world by the American travel publication Traven + Leisure, who said the “ancient” city’s dramatic landscape of volcanos and its grand castle is a spectacular place to visit. 

However, Edinburgh is known for its moody and misty weather which adds to its magical atmosphere, but also means it is not the best place for anyone wanting to take a beach vacation. 

People who are more likely to enjoy a visit to Edinburgh are history enthusiasts as the city is known for its incredible medieval attractions in the Old Town while also having beautiful Georgian architecture in its New Town. 

While some of the most obvious places to visit are Edinburgh Castle, history fans should also consider taking a walk through Dean Village, a historic spot known for its well-preserved 19th-century buildings and relaxing atmosphere away from crowds. 

There is also the Surgeons' Hall Museum which showcases the history of medicine in Edinburgh and is known for its interesting exhibitions while showing a unique perspective on history. 

Any nature lovers who do not mind packing an umbrella should visit Arthur Seat, an extinct volcano, that offers amazing views of the city, and Royal Botanic Gardens known for its world-renowned plant collection. 

Some quieter green places to consider are Corstorphine Hill, a wooded hillside which also Corstorphine Hill Tower, a memorial to Sir Walter Scott but has magnificent views of Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. 

Edinburgh tends to be a great city for anyone who loves hiking or taking long walks as it has been named as one of the UK’s most pedestrian-friendly cities according to Workthere as one in six residents travel to work on foot. 

It is also the perfect place for book lovers, as the city is well-known for being the inspiration for J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series as well as having many bookshops and cosy cafes which are perfect to read in. 

Some independent bookstores worth visiting are Golden Hare Books, the second-hand store Armchair Books and Topping & Company Booksellers known for their tranquil atmosphere have a wide variety for bookworms to enjoy.

Anyone who wishes to visit Edinburgh is best to do so now in late May or early June to avoid the summer crowds as the very popular Edinburgh Festival will draw in lots of tourists in July and August. 

The next best time to visit would be in September or October, as the city will have fewer visitors before Christmas plus the city looks spectacular in autumn, and there tend to be lots of fun ghost tours and other Halloween-themed attractions for anyone who loves the holiday.
