Food and drink can be quite expensive on a flight so some people opt to take their own refreshments. However, airlines have different rules on what you can and can't take on board.

While some items are completely off-limits, there are others which are welcomed by airlines. TUI, easyJet and Ryanair have different rules with some universal restrictions. Here is a breakdown of the food and drinks you can't take on board certain flights, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.

TUI

A trolley service selling food and drinks is available on shorter TUI routes. Passengers are also able to bring their own food, but there are some restrictions.

The airline says people should bring "low-risk food such as pre-made sandwiches and snacks that can be eaten cold". Passengers are unable to ask staff to provide heating facilities except for heating up bottles for babies.

Meanwhile, all alcohol must be purchased on the plane. Passengers are unable to take their own booze on board.

easyJet

Passengers are welcome to take their own food on board easyJet flights. However, the airline stresses the importance of people checking the rules on taking certain food types into the country they're heading to.

Information on the easyJet website reads: "You can bring food into the cabin, although we do sell a range of delicious food and drink on board. There’s a 100ml limit for liquid food, like soup or custard.

"Different countries have different regulations about importing food and drink, so make sure you check the rules for your destination."

Passengers are also able to take hot drinks on board. However, they must have been purchased at the airport and have a tight lid on.

Ryanair

Ryanair operates a "feel free" policy, which allows passengers to take food and soft drinks on board flights. However, they are unable to take their own alcohol or hot drinks.

The airline said: "In the interest of safety, we cannot allow passengers to board the plane with hot drinks or consume their own alcohol during the flight."
