If I told you that you could travel from Lima, Peru, to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in a whopping 100 hours for £154, would you believe me?

Since 2017, Ormeño, one of Peru’s most established bus companies, has been offering a remarkable journey that earned them a Guinness world record. This 100-hour bus trip allows passengers to travel directly from the vibrant Peruvian capital Lima to the bustling metropolis of Rio de Janeiro.

Spanning 6,500 kilometres, with an estimated journey duration of 102 hours — just over four days — this route links two oceans and two of South America’s most important sights. These include Christ the Redeemer in Rio and Machu Picchu in Cusco.

Previously, the bus route stopped in São Paulo. However, responding to customer demand for a “true transatlantic connection”, the bus company extended their services all the way to Rio de Janeiro.

This extraordinary journey begins in Lima, taking you through the majestic Andes mountains, offering panoramic views, and a glimpse into the lives of the indigenous communities. The route continues through the dense, tropical Amazon jungles and crosses into the heart of Brazil, culminating in the iconic city of Rio de Janeiro.

To address safety concerns, multiple bus drivers have been employed, who take turns resting in a sleeping cabin, ensuring that there is always someone who is alert at the steering wheel.

South America takes great pride in its Transoceánica route, but the journey isn’t without its challenges.

The extreme weather conditions and marathon trek through the Amazon rainforest, over the Andes, and across the Peruvian desert can offer infinite opportunities for mishaps and delays.

However, for those craving adventure and an immersive experience into the diverse cultures and landscapes of South America, there’s no better journey than the world’s longest bus route.

It is also an ideal option for budget-conscious backpackers who are seeking a truly unforgettable experience.
