Deciding on your staycation can be tricky with so much choice. Often, the famous spots in Cornwall and the Cotswolds are rammed with tourists and rightly so, but sometimes you want some peace and quiet.

Whilst many will be familiar with stunning Whitby, the lesser-known seaside town of Filey is equally as charming, just 26 miles down the road on the Yorkshire Coast.

Having only half of the population of its famous neighbour, the town is known for its golden beach and dramatic views over the peninsula.

Like Whitby, the town also boasts a rich history as Roman remains have been discovered within it.

The peninsula Filey Brigg sits a mile north of the town where you can spot crabs and other sea creatures in the many rock pools.

The town is also part of the North York Moors National Park, meaning there are plenty of opportunities for both hikers and cyclists to enjoy the surrounding area.

Filey was primarily a fishing village, with many who undertook the practice descending from a long line of fishermen and women. However, restrictions have been placed upon the usage of nets, meaning that it is now in decline.

However, there are still many traditional fish and chip shops located in and around the town you can try such as Ingham's Fish Restaurant, which is consistently rated as one of the best in the surrounding area.  There are many other restaurants within the town as well, which boast a variety of food from around the world, including Italian, Chinese and American cuisine.

Favourites on Tripadvisor include San Marco Restaurant, The Golden Dragon and Benny's Bar and Grill.

Despite its quaint feel, there are still a number of attractions to ensure that tourists will never run out of things to do.

Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park hosts a vast array of wildlife, from meerkats to parrots, and is open all week from 10am to 5pm. The paddling pool is also a great spot for families, with its position overlooking the beautiful North Sea.

For those wishing to extend their visit and immerse themselves further in the slower and more relaxing pace of life which the town offers, there is a range of hotels, guesthouses and self-catering cottages, located either on the coast or within the historic town.
