A new study has named the UK's most welcoming cities, just in time for English Tourism Week to kick off.
Planning a staycation? A new study has ranked the UK's friendliest cities and the most welcoming metropolis is a popular seaside resort.
The team at LNER ranked cities based on their level of hospitality and residents' personal wellbeing using ONS and Tripadvisor data.
Claire Ansley, customer experience director at LNER, said: "Apart from culture, attractions, and surroundings, one of the most important factors when choosing a destination to visit is the hospitality of its people.
“From striking up conversations in a local pub to receiving an act of kindness from strangers, visiting somewhere where locals are welcoming and affable can make a huge difference in your travel experience.
“Whether you’re looking for a solo city break or family vacation, our research reveals the friendliest destinations in the UK, where visitors will receive an especially warm welcome as they make memories and enjoy their travel experiences."
10. Chelmsford
Chelmsford was the 10th most welcoming city in the UK. Located in the heart of Essex, Chelmsford became a city in 2012. Top sights include the Cathedral, the gardens at Hyde Hall and the Call Of The Wild zoo. The city is also considered one of the UK's best places to live so it might be worth having a property browse while you're there.
9. Colchester
Another Essex city made the top 10 with Colchester grabbing ninth place on the list. Known as Britain's first city, Colchester's Roman history dates back over 2,000 years. If you're looking to combine coast and history, why not check out nearby Mersea Island?
8. St Albans
One of the UK's prettiest commuter cities, St Albans in Hertfordshire is one of England's friendliest destinations. The cathedral city has a medieval clock tower and a Roman theatre.
7. Chester
One of the UK's prettiest historic cities, Chester is also one of its most welcoming. Browse the shops on the iconic Chester Rows. marvel at the city's Roman heritage or go for a cruise on the River Dee. The city's zoo is also thought of as one of the country's best.
6. Bath
Bath was one of the UK's friendliest cities, landing just outside the top five. Famed for its Roman baths, the city also has plenty of Georgian buildings to marvel at. Try a bath bun at one of the city's many teahouses.
