Affordable European city break is filled with 'quirky' hidden gems
From history to food, the capital of Greece has plenty to offer tourists, with many not knowing about all the spots Athens has to offer.
The travel blogger Emily Luxton has shared the best things to do in one of Europe’s cheapest destinations for a city break.
Athens is an incredibly popular choice for tourists looking for some sun, thanks to its low flight costs and thousands of years’ worth of history.
However, Emily noted that travellers wanting some peace and quiet in the capital of Greece should go on a walking tour focusing on the more authentic side of Athens.
She advised: “When I visited Athens, I took a walking tour with a fantastic local company called Alternative Athens. They’re easily one of the best tour companies for the city, offering small-group walking tours led by expert local guides – all of which aim to take you beyond the classic tourist sites and help you get to know the real, authentic Athens.
“It’s the perfect introduction to the city, taking in most of the main sites as well as some of the city’s quirkier districts. Plus, your guide will be able to share lots of insider tips for places to eat and drink during your trip to Athens.”
With Athens’ history spanning back 5,000 years, many tourists enjoy taking a trip to the Parthenon when they visit the city.
However, Emily suggested that there is a wide range of ancient sites that most tourists do not think about visiting, including the Temple of Hephaestus and the Panathenaic Stadium.
Travellers interested in their history were also advised to buy a Combo Ticket, which allows entry to seven different attractions across Athens.

For something a little more modern, Emily recommended tourists spend a day walking around the city looking for street art.
Whilst street art can be found across the city, the expert noted that the best pieces can be found in Gazi, Metaxourgio, Monastiraki, and Psirri.
In addition, visitors who do not want to go on a hunt for themselves can take a specialist street art tour, which typically takes between two and three hours.
Finally, the tourism personality stated that visitors cannot go to Athens without sampling some of the city’s food, noting it is one of the best ways to learn about different cultures.
Naturally, the city is home to all manner of cafes, restaurants, and vendors, however, there are a number of guided trips that allow tourists to sample food from the best venues.
The tours typically focus on the history behind some of the city's famous dishes and trips to stores that produce wine and olive oil.
