The bustling market town hidden in plain sight of Lake District that is among UK's best
This pretty little town is known as the gateway to one of England's most spectacular valleys - but most Brits have never even heard of it.
A pretty little town with a bustling market has captured the attention of hardcore travellers after they realised it was hidden in plain sight and was one of the best in the UK. The little postcard town is of historic importance in the north of England and boasts a plentiful supply of distinctive architecture.
The charming town is one of Cumbria’s finest, and is said to be “the main gateway for exploring the Eden Valley”, which is internationally recognised as one of the finest in the world.
Nevertheless, Penrith is worth staying in for the town itself, as it is a major market town in the region and is packed full of “specialist, family-run shops”, as well as an array of pubs ranging from “cosy” to “atmospheric”, according to the local tourist board.

Tourists are urged to check out its Tuesday market as well, which is absolutely bustling with a variety of fresh food and drink on offer. The market attracts huge crowds who love to spend the time catching up with neighbours and weaving in and out of the pretty little stalls.
Meanwhile, nearby to the town are plenty of important cultural and heritage sites, including ‘King Arthur’s Round Table’ at Eamont Bridge, as well as a nearby monolith at Mayburgh Henge. These two artefacts strongly indicate the area was inhabited in prehistoric times.

Meanwhile, Penrith is also surrounded by a number of other picturesque little villages, including Lazonby, which lays claim to the largest auction mart for grey-faced mules in the UK. Eamont Bridge, meanwhile, has many historic houses and inns and was an important village for travellers who needed to cross the River Eamont.
Penrith is also bordered by the stunning Lake District National Park which is home to some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world, as well as numerous UNESCO-protected pretty little villages, like Windermere - whose iconic Lake Windermere is in big trouble thanks largely to the Conservatives’ poor regulation of private water companies who regularly dump sewage in it.
