1. Old Edinburgh's spookiest secrets will be revealed on a Haunted Hallowe'en Tour.
Viator.com is offering a walking tour which weaves its way through the historic Old Town past creepy Canongate graveyard.
Gruesome history and ghoulish stories will be unleashed during the 90-minute tours which are available on October 29, 30 and 31 at various times. Tickets £11.
2. The blood-curdling history of execution is explored at Oxford Castle (01865 260666/ oxfordcastleunlocked.co.uk) until November 2. Discover spine-chilling crimes carried out by many who met their grisly end at the old castle prison.

3. Head to Shugborough Estate, Staffordshire (0845 459 8900/shugborough.org.uk) and take a ride on the ghost train or an unnerving stroll around the Zombie Garden.
The Georgian mansion, set in 900 acres, will be transformed into a haunted house for the evening Spooktacular on October 31.

4. Join a pumpkin trail at Burghley House, Lincolnshire (01780 752451/burghley.co.uk).
Until November 2 follow the trail around the grounds of the Elizabethan manor and uncover hidden pumpkins to receive a treat. Admittance free with a house or garden ticket. Tickets £13 per adult, £6.50 per child.
5. Sink your teeth into a real dark night encounter with a visit to Whitby Abbey (english-heritage. org.uk), North Yorkshire.
The setting for part of Bram Stoker's Dracula is perhaps one of the eeriest places you could visit.

6. Experience Hallowe'en afloat with a ride through one of the longest tunnels on the Grand Union Canal.
Blisworth Tunnel is nearly two miles long and has reputedly spooked a number of boaters for years with stories of strange flickering candlelight.
