Roger Federer’s coach reacts to big decision before the US Open
ROGER FEDERER has made the right decision in skipping the Rogers Cup.
Those are the thoughts of the Swiss legend’s coach Sverin Luthi.
Federer was due to play at the tournament in Montreal, but withdrew and cited his scheduling as the main reason for pulling out.
The world No 2, who hasn’t played since his quarter-final defeat to Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon last month, will hope to play at the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season at Flushing Meadows, New York later this month.
While his absence at the Rogers Cup might disappoint fans, Luthi understands why Federer is doing it.
The most important thing is that he is fresh, motivated and inspired
“Would it be an advantage for him to play two tournaments prior to the US Open? For me, nope,” Luthi said.
“Yeah, someone will say: 'And if he loses in the Cincinnati first round?'
“But the most important thing is that he is fresh, motivated and inspired.
“At 37 and with his experience, he doesn’t need 25 tournaments before a Major.
“In certain circumstances, it would have been more ideal to skip Stuttgart before Wimbledon, but it’s easy to say it after.
“I don’t think it would be an advantage to play Toronto and Cincinnati, at all.”
Federer is bidding to win his sixth US Open title and first at Flushing Meadows in a decade.
