Angelique Kerber books Wimbledon semi-final spot with Daria Kasatkina win
ANGELIQUE KERBER booked her place in the Wimbledon semi-finals by beating Daria Kasatkina over a thrilling two sets.
Kerber cruised to a 6-3 first-set win but Kasatkina upped her game in the second and blossomed as the match grew older.
With Kerber leading 6-5, Kasatkina saved six match points which included a magnificent winner after a 25-shot rally.
After a 10 minute game, the highest seed left in the competition progressed by converting a backhand deep down the line after initially pushing her Russian opponent out wide.
Kerber faces Jelena Ostapenko, who beat Dominika Cibulkova on Court 1, in the semi-finals on Thursday.
“I know that I was expecting a tough and close match against,” Kerber said.
“I tried to play point by point and the end was… yeah.
“It is great to be in the semis.
“I was thinking I was running everywhere on the court. She played really well.
“She was moving me a lot and I was trying not think about match point or deuce. I was just trying to push myself to the limit actually.
“I don’t care about who I am playing. We are here in the semis so every opponent is tough.
“I am looking forward to playing the semi and I will focus on my own game.”
