Kyle Edmund demolishes Alex de Minaur to earn French Open second round spot
KYLE EDMUND powered his way into the second round at Roland Garros with a 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 thumping of Australian teenager Alex de Minaur.
The British no1 is in the second round for the fourth year running, his height and power far too much for the wiry, diminutive 19 year old.
Edmund, who reached the semi finals of the Australian Open this year, was never in trouble, surging his way into a 5-1 lead before taking the first set.
The Edmund serve suffered a wobble at the start of the second set with a series of double faults which gave De Minaur some chances, and the Yorkshireman had to fight back after being broken to tie the set at 4-4, to break back and assume control again.
The Australian though could not maintain the pressure, and Edmund, now ranked 17 in the world to De Minaur’s 105, and with wins over Novak Djokovic and David Goffin under his belt this year, surged into a 3-1 in the third set to take the match.
Though Edmund’s serving had been erratic at times, his powerful forehand and overall strength of serve were too much for the Australian, who was bidding to reach the third round for the first time and equal his best ever Grand Slam result.
