Roger Federer: Yannick Noah makes shock Davis Cup claim about Swiss legend
ROGER FEDERER and Rafael Nadal’s absence from the Davis Cup has affected the competition.
Roger Federer hasn't played in the Davis Cup since 2015
Those are the thoughts of former Grand Slam winner and captain of France’s Davis Cup team Yannick Noah.
Federer hasn’t featured at the Davis Cup since 2015, although one of his career highlights came when he was part of the victorious Switzerland side the year before.
Nadal has missed the tournament since helping five-time winners Spain return to the top tier of world tennis in 2016.
After his recent problems with a knee injury, the 31-year-old is set to return next week when his country take on Germany in the quarter-finals.
When Federer or Nadal prefer to play other events, it gets more complicated
Some players have often shunned the Davis Cup to focus on accumulating as many points on the ATP Tour.
And Noah thinks the tournament loses its prestige when Nadal and Federer sit it out.
“The current format is very good, but when Federer or Nadal prefer to play other events, it gets more complicated,” Noah said.

However, Noah understands the priorities of some players, adding: “When our (the French) No 1 says that his priority goes to the Davis Cup, it is the spirit that would have saved the event as it was.
“Some players prefer to play exhibitions or events with more remuneration, it is their choice.”
The Davis Cup quarter-finals takes place over the weekend of April 6-8.
