Federer was far from vintage, but he came through in three sets against the world number three Alexander Zverev in the ATP World Tour Finals - 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-1.
The victory ensured he booked his place in the semi-finals of the tournament with one round robin game to spare.
Federer, who has 19 Grand Slam titles to his name, is chasing his third title at London’s 02 Arena.
His path to the final has been made easier by the fact Rafael Nadal withdrew from the tournament on Monday with a knee injury.
