Nadal has been suffering with a knee injury in recent weeks and was forced to withdraw from the season-ending tournament following his 6-7, 7-6, 4-6 defeat to Goffin.
The World No 1 pulled out of the Paris Masters two weeks ago but was confident he could compete at this week’s event, even if it meant playing through pain.
However, Nadal announced he could not continue following a thrilling battle with Goffin, stating he would have withdrawn even if he had won the match.
The Spaniard has never triumphed at the ATP Finals, and looked visibly upset as he waved goodbye to the O2 crowd before officially withdrawing.
Pablo Carreno Busta will now play the remainder of Nadal’s matches, having been on standby as first alternate.
