The 24-year-old cut a despondent figure after losing the first set against Mischa Zverev with supporters accusing him of not trying.
Tomic claimed he was in the top 10 grasscourt players in the world ahead of the tournament - despite his best showing coming six years ago when he reached the quarter-finals.
For many Aussies, enough was enough, as they took to Twitter to vent their fury.
One tweeted: "Tomic would have to be the laziest tennis player to ever step foot on court. I am embarrassed to call him a fellow Aussie at the moment."
A fellow Australian wrote: "Tomic is dead set kidding himself here. have a go you pretender, unaustralian."

Australian bad boy Nick Kyrgios had to retire with injury yesterday while Thanasi Kokkinakis lost his first set to Juan Martin del Potro.
One fan added: "First Kyrgios, and now Tomic. I am ashamed to have them represent Australia. Pathetic. C'mon Thanasi and Dasha! #7tennis #Wimbledon"
Another demanded Tomic to be hit in the pocket and wrote: "Tomic just simply not trying. Should face a fine . Total disgrace."
