Murray pointed to his chest during the fifth set of his 6-2, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win and admitted it was a message to the small corner of support in stadium filled with locals saluting an unexpected French hero.
“The signal was just to my team,” he confirmed. “I showed a lot of heart the last few days in tough, tough matches, and a tough atmosphere.
"Maybe I was not feeling or playing my best, but I found a way to win.”
