On the court, it’s tough to grind down Daniil Medvedev. A master of defence, the former world No. 1 can battle from the baseline for days, and he’s come through plenty of marathon five-setters in his time. While slow and steady often wins him the race in tennis, it’s been a different story when Medvedev gets on the road.

The Russian’s father, Sergey, has opened up on Medvedev’s love for motor sports and fast cars - something that once got him into trouble, as Medvedev was caught speeding with fellow ATP star Grigor Dimitrov in Monaco and had his license suspended.

It’s no secret the world No. 11 loves racing. He hits up the Thermal Club when in Indian Wells, and he’s even been go-karting with Williams driver Alex Albon.

But things went a little far five years ago when Medvedev was caught out while heading home from a practice session.

Sergey Medvedev has given an insight into his son’s life and interests away from the match court in a new interview with Mr. Tennis, and he shed light on the 29-year-old’s need for speed.

“One could also say that he was such a versatile person, he liked a lot of things, he has different tastes and indulges in a lot of activities,” Sergey said.

“He loves motor racing and cars, when he has free time, he climbs into the car. Once in Monte Carlo he was caught for over speeding over 160 [kilometres an hour], and he was driving with Grigor Dimitrov at that time.”

It’s no surprise that the Russian enjoys life in the fast lane. When Medvedev was growing up, Sergey always had live sports on TV, and he soon fell in love with watching races.

Medvedev’s dad explained: “He was perhaps forced to watch, and then became carried away. He watched every competition that I watched. He loved watching biathlon and racing.”

The world No. 11 previously opened up on the speeding incident during the 2020 Western and Southern Open, admitting he lost his license for six months.

“Yeah, I exceeded the speed limits. So I cannot drive in France for six months. Yeah, I had nothing to do. I took it as it is. I broke the rules, so I have to pay for it,” Medvedev explained.

“I was going 163 kilometers per hour, where probably it would be like 159 they would not take my license away.”

Asked whether he knew the speed limit at the time, the 29-year-old added: “Yeah, but it was no cars and I was going home after a tough practice day, so I wanted to be home faster.”

Medvedev still enjoys driving and collecting cars, he has a brand deal with BMW and has shared snaps of his vehicles on social media. But the Russian now saves the speeding for the go-kart tracks instead of the roads.
