Stefanos Tstsipas explained that he was competing in all three possible French Open competitions “because of love” in an "emotional" on-court interview. The Greek star had defeated Zhang Zhizhen 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 in the third round at Roland Garros before explaining his Parisian process, in which he delighted the Court Suzanne-Lenglen crowd.

Tsitsipas spoke to two-time French Open finalist Alex Corretja in the immediate aftermath of his victory, having set up a fourth-round tie with Matteo Arnaldi. The 25-year-old is a busy man at this Grand Slam, competing in the men’s singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles competitions.

He is joined by his younger brother Petros in the men’s doubles, while playing alongside girlfriend and fellow professional Paula Badosa as they attempt mixed doubles success, having recently rekindled their romance.

Last month, the tennis power duo confirmed that they had split up after nearly a year of dating. But they were spotted together in Monaco before the French Open and announced that they were back together ahead of the second Grand Slam of the year.

As one of the busiest players at the French Open, Tsitsipas was asked by on-court interviewer Corretja if he plays so many matches for rhythm purposes or to avoid having days off during a Grand Slam, but Tstisipas instead had a heartwarming response.

"Well, it's all because of love,” Tsitsipas said. “Yeah, it is if you think about it... On both sides. It all has to do with love and getting to combine love and tennis is quite exceptional I have got to say.”

Corretja then admitted he was “getting a bit emotional” after speaking with Tsitsipas and once the official Roland Garros X (formerly known as Twitter) account posted a clip of the exchange, Badosa replied with two heart emojis.

Having rekindled their romance in the same month that their break-up was announced, Tsitsipas confirmed the news after he and Badosa were spotted holding hands in Monaco.

“We're together,” he told Greek outlet SDNA. “I will explain why some people make up different stories about us. Not that I care, but I think people shouldn't take it that way. Neither Paula did anything wrong, nor did I do anything wrong. It was hard for us being apart and I was going through some hard times too.

“I would say that I didn't manage it very well either, because I was feeling the pressure of the tour, of my work. It seemed like a mountain to combine these two (personal and professional life) and I made the decision to take a break. After two or three weeks I realised that she is a woman who has supported me a lot and when she tried to talk to me about meeting I felt how intense the love we have for each other is.”
