Carlos Alcaraz will defend his US Open title as the No 1 seed when the final Grand Slam of the year gets underway in New York on Monday. The Spaniard, who moved back to the top of the world rankings after beating Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, came unstuck against his Serbian rival in the final of the Cincinatti Open last Sunday but edged out the 23-time Grand Slam champion by just 20 points to take the top seed position at Flushing Meadows.
It is the third time that Murcia native Alacaraz has been installed as the top seed for a Grand Slam after he was awarded the berth at both SW19 and the French Open. Alacaraz was set to be the No 1 seed at the Australian Open in January as well, before withdrawing with an injury.
With Djokovic second seed, 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev is placed third. Danish star Holger Rune takes his highest-ever Grand Slam seeding in fourth, followed by Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev. The American pair of Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe completes the top 10.
Other US stars to make it into the list of 32 seeded players in the men's draw include Tommy Paul (14), Chris Eubanks (28) and Sebastian Korda (31). It is a significant moment for Georgia-born Eubanks who is seeded for the first time in his career having only broken into the world's top 100 earlier this year.
The 27-year-old one his maiden ATP title in Mallorca a week before making it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, propelling him into the spotlight.
Britain has two seeded representatives with Cameron Norrie ranked 16th and Dan Evans 26th, but Andy Murray is five places outside the rankings and will not be seeded. Notable absentees in the men's draw include Rafael Nadal and Nick Kyrgios who are both still recovering from injuries that have wrecked their seasons, while Jan-Lennard Struff and Denis Shapovalov have both withdrawn.
In the women's draw, there is no Emma Raducanu. She is missing after undergoing wrist surgery as she looks to address a problem that has rendered her season a write-off. The 19-year-old became the first Brit to win a Grand Slam title since Virginia Wade when she stunned the tennis world in New York two years ago without dropping a set.
Polish star Iga Swiatek is the top seed for the seventh consecutive time. Despite suffering a surprise defeat to Coco Gauff in the Cincinnati Open semifinals, she is still world No 1 and will look to defend her title as the number one seed.
