Andy Murray produces superb winner against Pablo Cuevas at European Open - video
Andy Murray showed he had lost none of his skill and speed as he won a thrilling rally.
European Open: Murray wins INTENSE rally against Cuevas
Andy Murray wowed the crowd at the European Open after winning a stunning point against Pablo Cuevas.
Murray was in second-round action in Antwerp against Cuevas and started well as he forced the Uruguayan to save seven break points in his opening two service games.
And in a long game at 2-1 in the first set, Cuevas had a point to level the match but was denied by a moment of brilliance from the Scotsman.
In a back and forth 18-shot rally, both players covered plenty of metres at the back of the court before Cuevas looked to have gained the advantage with a deft backhand drop shot.
But Murray chased the ball down and flicked a forehand up the line, completely wrong-footing Cuevas.
After his hip surgery 10 months ago, it was a clear demonstration that Murray is edging closer to his best.
Former British player Barry Cowan said on Amazon Prime: “If you’ve been away the last two-and-a-half years you wouldn’t know what Murray has had to go through when you watch a point like this.
“It’s simply magnificent.”
Meanwhile, former British no 1 Greg Rusedski reckons Murray’s level since his return has been a pleasant surprise.
He said: “I've been pleasantly surprised. I thought it would be much more difficult for him, I thought it would take a little bit longer, but he's played very, very well.
"The question mark is still how much can his body take week in, week out. There's still a long road back.
"He's played two matches back to back, but can he play three, four, five days in a row?
“It's too hard to predict. I think we'll know more when he plays the Australian Open and a three-out-of-five-set match.
"It's not his mentality or his tennis, it's what the body will allow him to do.
“But the signs are very positive."
