Novak Djokovic told to copy Roger Federer to stay as world No 1 after Monte Carlo loss
NOVAK DJOKOVIC has been told he must copy Roger Federer’s anger if he is to stay as world No 1.
Monte Carlo Masters: Medvedev DEFEATS Djokovic
Djokovic suffered a shock Monte Carlo Masters quarter-final defeat to Daniil Medvedev this afternoon.
It is the third consecutive tournament, following Indian Wells and the Miami Open, which the Serbian has crashed out early.
Tennis pundit Daniela Hantuchova had a gripe with the way Djokovic was so gracious in his defeat to Medvedev.
She feels the 31-year-old should have been much more disappointed.
“The difference when Roger says his opponent was better, it is like he admits it but he is angry which is good,” Hantuchova told Amazon Prime.
“It is a normal reaction but this to me is a little bit too nice.
“You won’t stay at No 1 in the world if you are happy for your opponent to have a nice win.”
Meanwhile, fellow pundit Greg Rusedski echoed his colleagues comments.
“It is interesting because Marian Vajda said love and peace, you can have it off the court but not in and around it,” he added.
“All of a sudden he showed up again.
“That love and peace doesn’t really work for Novak Djokovic.
“He needs that fire and steam to get out his frustrations.
Masters: Djokovic says clay courts can be 'unpredictable'
“It doesn’t work for him - that’s not him.
“It’s like saying to Rafael Nadal ‘Don’t fist pump. Don’t get emotional with the crowd’.
“He wouldn’t be the same player.
“Djokovic’s formula, which has taken him to world No 1, is to have that passion and that emotion on the court.”
