Roger Federer makes affectionate promise to his family at the Miami Open
ROGER FEDERER has made a heart-felt pledge to his family as he continues his preparations for May’s French Open.
Federer: I would RETIRE if family weren't happy
When Roger Federer announced that he would return to the French Open in 2019 after three years away, it prompted reports that the Swiss was preparing to retire at the end of the season.
However, Federer has regularly batted away questions of when he could quit - claiming he has no intention of bringing an end to his incredible career in the near future.
Despite that, the 37-year-old made a bold statement on his future involving his family after being asked if a big injury would force him quit.
“Probably. Probably right,” Federer told Amazon Prime on Thursday.
“I think it goes in combination, as well, if my family wouldn’t be happy then I wouldn’t be doing it.
“If my wife wasn’t happy, same.”
Federer, and his wife Mirka, have two sets of twins, girls born in 2009 and boys in 2014.
Despite his family playing a key part in his future in the sport, the eight-time Wimbledon champion also named his ageing body as a limitation.
If my family wouldn’t be happy then I wouldn’t be doing it
“Then if I felt like I had too much pain in my body, that wouldn’t be fun anymore," he added.
“When I realise that the body isn’t allowing me to get to the level that I’m at right now.
“If I feel like I can’t win tournaments anymore, that’s another thing.
“And if I feel like I can’t beat the best anymore, that would be another one.
“So long as all the stars are aligned, you answered it perfectly.
“We’re not thinking about retirement.
“Because, I feel like the more I think about it, the closer and closer I am to it.
“There’s no plans yet, there were talks about the Tokyo Olympics, but that’s not true.”
