Roger Federer: Tony Godsick reveals why star was REJECTED by top coach
ROGER FEDERER was rejected by coach Darren Cahill in 2009, according to his agent Tony Godsick.
Federer was looking for a new coach and took Cahill for nine days of warm-weather training in Dubai.
The Australian, who previously mentored Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt, turned down the opportunity to link up with the Swiss star.
Federer then hired Paul Annacone in a bid to end his Grand Slam drought.
However, Cahill remained coy about the reason he did not jump at the opportunity to work with another legend.
But Godsick has since lifted the lid on why Federer was rejected by Cahill.
“Darren is an amazing man, he has a fantastic personality, and it would have been a true gift for Roger,” he said.
“But he did not want to travel so much, he has a young family and he wants to stay close to them.”
Godsick took a break from coaching but returned to help Simona Halep to the French Open title this year.
Meanwhile, Federer is now mentored by Severin Luthi and Ivan Ljubicic.
The world No 3 is back in Dubai this week preparing for the start of the new season.
Federer’s next match will be for Switzerland against Great Britain in the Hopman Cup on Sunday, December 30 at 9.30am (GMT).
Cameron Norrie will be Federer’s first opponent, followed by a mixed doubles match.
