Roger Federer left bemused after Jan-Lennard Struff win: ‘I don’t know why’
ROGER FEDERER says he does not know why he cannot get through a match without losing a service game.
Federer admits he won't feel 'pressure' at the Swiss Indoors
Federer lost four of his service games during his opening Swiss Indoors clash against Filip Krajinovic on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old also gave Jan-Lennard Struff an early advantage today as the German took a 3-1 first-set lead.
Federer recovered to win his second-round tie 6-3, 7-5 but he was left wondering why his service game is continuing to let him down.
The world No 3 is through to the quarter-finals and will face the winner of Gilles Simon vs Ernests Gulbis on Friday.
And Federer is going to analyse his recent performance to try and improve his serve in the business end of the tournament.
“Don‘t know why I can‘t play a match without being broken anymore,” Federer said.
“[It] happened to me in Shanghai already, have to go through statistics of this match.
“Maybe I‘ll manage next match without being broken.“
Federer is hoping to win a ninth career title in his hometown event this week.
And after booking his place in the last eight, he reflected on his first meeting with Andre Agassi in Basel as a 17-year-old two decades ago.
“When I played Andre Agassi here 20 years ago, two things went through my head before the match,” he said.
“First, hopefully I won‘t get beaten 6-0, 6-0.
“Second, I thought, ‘mmh, you never know what could happen in tennis!’
“At the end I was happy with the outcome (a 6-3, 6-2 defeat).“
Federer will be desperate to win the Swiss Indoors as his only other confirmed tournament remaining this season is the ATP Tour Finals.
