Novak Djokovic explains Roger Federer emotions at US Open
NOVAK DJOKOVIC has explained how Roger Federer is able to stay calm to continue being a dominate force in tennis.
Federer has won 20 Grand Slam titles across his illustrious career and is heading into the US Open, which starts on Monday, as one of the front runners for the title.
Djokovic is the favourite to win the competition after his success at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Masters over the past two months.
But he has taken time to hail Federer ahead of his return to action in New York.
The Serbian believes his potential quarter-final opponent has an incredible level of composure because he is able to control his breathing, and he even drew comparisons to NBA great Michael Jordan.
“Breathing is the most important thing that we all do and you have to master it to know how to cope with pressure and situations that are very stressful,” Djokovic said.
“Even a guy like [Roger] Federer, who seems like nothing bothers him.
“I’m sure that he deals with a lot of emotions inside.
“But he has mastered the control over those emotions in his mind and that’s why he’s been so successful.
“All the biggest athletes in the history of sports have that in common — Michael Jordan — this ability to be in the zone where you need to be when it is most important.
“That is due to the understanding of who you are and the importance of dedication to every aspect and every detail so you can maximise your potential.”
Djokovic also praised Federer for the way he manages his schedule - which often comes under criticism for skipping key events such as the French Open.
“Federer has always had a great way of dealing with the schedule,” he added.
“I think in terms of scheduling, I've learned a lot from him, in terms of how to pick certain tournaments and peak at the right time so you can perform your best when it's most needed, the most important events.”
