Matthews was taking part in a charity softball game which also featured other Packers stars.
The 32-year-old was pitching when a line drive was fired straight back at him.
The ball hit the six-time Pro Bowler straight in the face with Matthews swiftly exiting the field.
And the Packers man revealed the extent of his injury on social media.
“Thank you for all the concern and well-wishes,” Matthews wrote on Twitter.
Thank you for all the concern and well-wishes. I busted my nose pretty good and will have surgery once the swelling subsides. Thankful as it could have been much more serious

Matthews is preparing for the new NFL season, which begins in September.
The Packers will be hunting their third Super Bowl having last lifted the Vince Lombardi trophy in 2010.
Green Bay will be hoping quarterback Aaron Rodgers can maintain his fitness this season having missed a chunk of last year with a shoulder injury.
The NFC North side averaged 27.4 points per game as Rodgers led them to a 4-1 start last season, then 17.3 in a 3-7 stretch after he broke his collarbone.
There has been plenty of talk surrounding a new Packers deal for Rodgers, which could see him become the highest paid player in the NFL.
And Rodgers has admitted he is keen to get a deal over the line, though knows it’s not an urgent matter.
He added: "I'm under contract for the next two years. Obviously we'd like to lock something in, I think, at some point.”
