The world No 19 was facing Rod Lawler in Sheffield and the 31-year-old dominated throughout.
He made a maximum in the 10th frame, however, he wrapped up his 10-2 win in dramatic fashion.
Liang had the chance to do what no player has ever done in a competitive match – make two 147s.
And when it was to him on a plate, Liang lost his nerve and missed the straightforward black on 140 in the 12th.

"I played well and I had a very good chance," he told World Snooker.
"I just want to play my game and show what I do in practice - that I can do 147s. Today was a very good chance. I tried.
"I need to calm down and focus now for my next match."
