The Briton was hot favourite for Tuesday’s time trial stage through La Rioja and the Sky leader duly swept his opponents aside in imperious fashion.
Froome roared home 29 seconds ahead of Dutchman Wilco Kelderman and gaining nearly a minute on closest overall challenger Vincenzo Nibali.
As a result, Froome nearly doubled his overall lead, with five stages remaining to 1-58 on the Italian, who nonetheless stubbornly promised to fight back in the mountains later this week.
“I’m super happy to be in this position,” said Froome. “It’s an amazing feeling to extend my lead. I have a good time buffer but the race isn’t over yet, I’ll have to keep fighting all the way to Madrid.”
