Team GB's women's curling team could not hold back their tears after they failed to make the final four at the Winter Olympics. The foursome, comprising Jenn Dodds, Rebecca Morrison, Sophie Jackson and Sophie Sinclair, kept their hopes of a medal alive with a strong win over Italy in their final round robin match. But their fate was out of their hands and their final stone cast as they awaited the outcome of USA vs Switzerland.

The team loitered around the ice as the Swiss landed an impressive three in the final end to further strengthen British hopes by forcing an extra end. A rollercoaster end followed, but the US managed to pull through with the final stone to claim the victory and to deny GB a place in the semi-finals.

Understandably, the British curlers cut emotional figures during their interviews with the BBC. Sinclair could only wipe away tears, and Morrison also had to work hard to keep her composure.

"We knew we just had to get that win today and see what happens," said Jackson. "Gutted. Absolutely gutted, but so proud of the team and the girls. We had a tough start to the week.

"I think we were the best team out there at the end of the round robin, but we just left it too late."

Dodds added: "Four years ago, we got through on five and four, so it is one of these things. Unfortunately, this time it isn't for us. So proud of the girls' resilience, we know we have so much resilience and we have shown that this week.

"We fought for everything, every shot. We were all together all the way. I couldn't be more proud of these girls this week."

Morrison offered: "Everyone has been amazing and I think we have felt the support these last few days. We knew we needed to win to stand a chance and everyone has got behind us."

It was a particularly cruel exit for Team GB, lamented former Olympic gold medalist curler, Vicky Wright. "That is so cruel. I feel for the GB girls," she said.

"They have showcased themselves so well all week and it is hard to take. I am definitely proud of their performance."
