Olympics medal table: Team GB add to tally on final day as USA pip China to top spot

There is a close fight for top spot during the final day of the Olympics between, as China look to stay ahead of the USA as the final few events take place. The two heavyweight giants are way out in front of their rivals, with both Australia and Japan 20 golds behind the US.

Meanwhile, France look set to finish fifth as the hosts currently have two more golds than Team GB, who will be looking over their shoulder with South Korea and Netherlands just one behind.

There are plenty of medal events to keep us entertained on the final day of the 2024 Olympics, given Team GB, China and the USA chances to add to their tally in Paris. A few medals to tell you about...

Denmark have beaten Germany to handball gold in the final - with the men's team winning their third successive medal at the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Serbia overcame Croatia to claim their third straight Olympics triumph in the men's water polo.

A thrilling race at the top of the standings

Japan have won two wrestling golds.

Kotaro Kiyooka triumphed in the freestyle wrestling in the men’s 65kg while Yuka Kagami won gold in the women's 76kg.

But USA immediately hit back on the cycling track, with Jennifer Valente sealing gold in the women's omnium.

How things stand...

China are currently two gold medals clear of the USA at the top of the standings.

China have 48 compared to USA's 38. Meanwhile, Japan are third on 19 with Australia one behind and France on 16.

The Netherlands have gone ahead of Team GB with 15 golds...

After silver in Tokyo, Emily Campbell has picked up bronze this time round in the women's +81kg weightlifting event.

Emma Finucane has clinched bronze in the women's sprint - winning 3-0 in the third-placed contest against Netherlands' Hetty van de Wouw.

Ninth place for Team GB star

Team GB star Kerenza Bryson has finished ninth in the modern pentathlon final.

It comes after Kate French pulled out for Team GB earlier on in the day.

Hungary's Michelle Gulyas claimed gold for Hungary.

Meanwhile, Elodie Clouvel sealed silver for France with her finish being met by huge applause.

Kate French has pulled out of the modern pentathlon final due to sickness, in a big blow to Team GB.

French is replaced by Germany's Annika Zillekens.

French will be cheering on her Team GB team-mate Kerenza Bryson, who is fighting for a medal.

First medal of the final day

Sifan Hassan has claimed gold for the Netherlands after a thrilling finish to the women's marathon.

Her victory comes after her bronze medals in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events.

Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia has taken silver and Kenya's Helen Obiri came home for bronze.
